Working with Chesapeake College, we provide supportive, conveniently located educational and technical learning  activities to Kent County residents to foster employment advancement, personal enrichment and tutoring. We work to remove financial, childcare, and transportation barriers to learning.

Beth was born and grew up in Baltimore, Md. After graduating from high school she became a nurse in 1967. Her first job was at Anne Arundel General Hospital in Annapolis. Beth married and had three children.

She moved to the Eastern Shore in 1976 and made her home on a farm in Wittman becoming a 4-H leader when her children became interested in livestock. She raised horses, goats, chickens and a sheep. She became a volunteer for the Special Riders of Talbot County, a program that teaches handicapped children to ride horses. She was also the treasurer of the Tilghman Island Elementary school PTA, while her children were students there. She was encouraged by a friend to become a preschool teacher which led to an Associates Degree in Early Childhood education from Chesapeake College and a job teaching at St. Luke's School in St. Michaels.

After her last child graduated from college, she left teaching and moved to Rock Hall where she became a member of the Artists of Rock Hall, and opened a shop in Oyster Court and later, a gallery on Main Street. She is an accomplished decorative painter specializing in furniture and wooden panels.

Beth worked in Home Health Care for 10 years before retiring in 2013. Since then she turned her love of gardening into three volunteer opportunities: the Rock Hall Garden Club, helping to maintain the town gardens, the Victory Garden, which provides fresh vegetables to the Food Pantry and the Eastern Neck (NWR) Butterfly Garden.

Beth became a tutor at the learning center in Rock Hall in 2015. In the short time she has been involved, she has made a difference and her students look forward to their sessions together.

Beth’s education, experience and her winning attitude make her a perfect match with the learning center, we are fortunate to have someone with her qualities.

Home Depot

Celebrating a Successful Year

Parents, teachers, tutors, and students will be meeting in May to evaluate the Home Depot Program and to celebrate the completion of our first year of tutoring.

The purpose of the meeting is to celebrate and recognize the tutors who donate several hours of their time and expertise weekly for he entire school year. Additionally , we will recognize student improvement and the cooperation among parents, Rock Hall Elementary School staff and the Kent County Learning Center staff.

The program will be evaluated by students, parents, teachers and tutors to identify ways to work even more closely together to help our students become successful, eager learners.

The Homework Depots in Chestertown and Emmanuel need mentors for students from local schools. The time commitment is 3:30 to 5:30  PM Tuesday and Thursdays at Emmanuel in Chestertown and from 3:30-4:30 PM or 6:30-7:30 PM  on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Rock Hall.

Qualifications: Baccalaureate or Higher, not necessarily in education. You do not need to know how to teach math beyond the elementary level as we have mentor experts in math.  Current volunteers are retired professionals from many fields.

Mathematics tutors are needed in Rock Hall for the 6:30 sessions for high school and middle school students. The content is most frequently  geometry, algebra I or II.

Requirements also include a crimminal background check (no expense to the applicant) and at Chestertown, completion of  free online course through the Episcopal Diocese of Easton in Child Abuse Prevention.  Rock Hall requires a short training session that can be scheduled individually.
